STC Board Meeting

March 6, 2006

Present: Joe Devney, Jim Dexter, Richard Mateosian, Jessica Livingston, Linda Urban, Jean Lundquist, Eunice Malley

Survey Results

Linda went over the results in depth, presenting a lot of good information for us to ponder and use in terms of what people are interested in. There were 52 respondents, which is about one-half of the people who were emailed the survey request. A synopsis of the results will be posted on our website. We will discuss the survey again in our next Board meeting. Meanwhile, Joe and Linda will discuss what information Joe needs in order to analyze the data more effectively.

Elections

Joe has not heard from Int’l STC about needed to step down from his current 3rd term as Chapter President. We will begin publicizing the elections on the website , email list , etc. soon in order to hold the elections in May. Members will be able to vote by email the first week in May. Jim mentioned that he is writing up By-Laws specific to our Chapter.

Ragged Left

Jean Lundquist is our new Editor. Thanks Jean! Linda will look at the template to see if it will import to Webworks.

Meetings

Joe will fill in as Hospitality manager for Jean in April and May. Suggested meeting places: School of Journalism at UC Berkeley, Rockridge Library. Jean will look into them. Linda suggested we consider meeting somewhere for dinner, and then go elsewhere for the meeting presentation.

Joe reported that the June meeting will have Erik Hennum of IBM giving a talk introducing DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture). July will be Sandra Korzenny, a manager at Apple. Apple always wins awards in our pubs. competitions. Topic TBD. Jim will contact Joanne Hackos to see if she would be willing to talk to us on estimating and planning for publications projects, perhaps as a special meeting if our regular meeting date doesn’t work for her.

Software from TechSoup

Based on TechSoup’s policies, Joe ordered 5 licenses for MS Project and the new version of Dreamweaver only; no Visio.

Treasurer’s Report

Deborah is finishing up her training with Ben. They had some problems accessing the Intranet and with the Quicken data. Deborah has paid the bills, got her signature on file with the bank, and prepared deposits. Right now we have $20 - $30 more in the cash box than the records say we should have.

May Int’l Conference in Las Vegas

We have been invited to submit at our own expense an insert advertising our Chapter’s benefits that will be included in the conference’s 2500 tote bags. Jessica will work on this and submit something to Joe in a week or so. Joe knows of some tie-dye paper we can get to convey Berkeley’s ambiance.

Publications Competition

We voted to have a competition this year, either local or with Touchstone. Joe will fnd out who has the “seed money” for this.

Membership

Jim reported that our membership members currently do not jive with STC Int’l’s. They are working on reconciling the numbers.

Website

Jim thinks restructuring the site is a good idea, and will talk to Linda about getting the STC Int’l’s template.

Jessica will submit the discussion group ID to Jim for posting.

February Meeting Minutes

These were approved.
