The Dr. Kenneth M. Gordon Scholarship is jointly sponsored by the STC chapters of Northern California. The Gordon Scholarship Committee has representatives from each chapter. The committee makes the scholarship awards. It also manages the Touchstone competition. Proceeds from Touchstone fund the Scholarship.
The Scholarship provides grants to students enrolled in technical communication programs at accredited colleges or universities in Northern California. Applicants must have completed enough work to demonstrate their potential for success in the field. Candidates apply in June, and successful applicants receive awards in August, in time for the beginning of the academic year. Awards range from $500 to $2000. Recipients are also offered a complimentary basic student membership in STC.
History
The scholarship is named for Dr. Kenneth M. Gordon, who worked as a technical editor at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and was a popular, long-time member of the East Bay chapter of STC. He was president of the chapter from 1985–88, and was also its newsletter editor. He is remembered as an early advocate for the Northern California Technical Communication Competition, and for having contributed greatly to the success of STC in Northern California in the early years.
The scholarship was created in 1992 when the 1990–91 communication competition, run by the East Bay Chapter under the leadership of Corinne Stefanick, generated a large surplus. Dr. Gordon had recently died, and the chapters decided to set aside $10,000 of the proceeds to establish a scholarship in his name.
Since that time, the Gordon Scholarship has been funded with proceeds from Touchstone.
