Chapter Meeting January 10, 2024 — Seeding the Clouds: How to Make It Rain on Yourself Even during a Dry Spell

Speaker: John Hedtke

About the program

Even in the best of times, it can be a challenge to find work. Technical communicators are occasionally at an added disadvantage of having to sell the value of our profession as well as ourselves as candidates, so anything we can do to give ourselves an edge is helpful.

This presentation by international award-winning author John Hedtke is of great value both to people who are currently seeking jobs as well as those who are secure in their current positions. It will show you two dozen ways to find work you probably haven’t even considered. There will be tips on common ideas such as updating your resume and creating a portfolio, but the presentation will rapidly expand to discuss ways in which you might create work for yourself and open up new work venues.

(Note: Most of the techniques discussed can be adapted by other professionals, so even if you’re moving away from technical communication or you have a spouse/friend who’s at a professional level but not a technical communicator, this is still an excellent seminar for info on finding work.)

About the speaker

John Hedtke is the award-winning author of 27 books. He has over 30 years in the software business and technical writing, and over a decade in technical publications management. John has developed and written documentation and books for many leading software products, and has received 26 writing awards to date. A complete list of books, articles, projects, and awards can be found online at his website, www.hedtke.com.

John owns Double Tall Consulting, a company that offers writing and business consulting services for a variety of private, public, and governmental clients. He also does numerous radio and magazine interviews and makes frequent appearances for lectures, conferences, and science-fiction conventions. John was a Director on the STC’s Board and is a Fellow of the Society. When not otherwise occupied, John writes scurrilous songs and sleeps late as much as possible. He lives in Steilacoom, WA, with his wife Marilyn and two old cats.

December 13, 2022 – San Francisco Bay STC Holiday Party – In Person

Free Food, Free Books, and Live Entertainment

About the program

Instead of having a December guest speaker via Zoom, we will be hosting an in-person holiday party!

The highlight of the evening will be our creative sharing time. This can take any form: A short story or poem you’ve written, a piece of art, a short video you made, or a craft project, such as a quilt or a sweater. Or you might play some music or rap, or sing a song. We hope you’ll share your talents and passion with us as we come together to celebrate the season! Sharing is completely optional.

Another tradition of our holiday parties is the book exchange. It’s optional, but if you want to participate, bring a new or gently used book, wrapped and unidentified. We’ll have a few extras if you forget but still want to participate.

Note: We’ve reserved a room with a finite capacity. We’ll try to accommodate everyone who shows up, but it would help if you would let us know you’re coming and let us know if you’re bringing guests. Send email to [email protected] to let us know your plans.

If you’d like a ride, or if you’re driving, please send an email to [email protected], and we’ll try to introduce drivers and riders. If you’re driving, please tell us when and from where you’re leaving and how many passengers you can take.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages are on us!

There will be no admission charge for this meeting.

See you there!

Chapter Meeting November 8, 2023: New Developments in Localization

Speaker: Jose Palomares

About the program

Join us for a discussion about localization with Jose Palomares, Director of Localization at Coupa Software. Born and raised in Barcelona, Spain, his trajectory in the localization industry spans more than 25 years as a translator, technologist, executive, and entrepreneur. Chapter Meeting October 11, 2023: Time Management for Technical Writers

Speaker: Mark Medalle

About the program

Technical writers work on many projects at the same time. Even within an individual, large project, there are so many moving parts. To quote the Bay Area native, Merl Saunders: “My problems got problems.” That’s where time management comes in! With a variety of techniques and tools to help you prioritize and organize, you can regain control over your work and (hopefully) reduce your stress levels, too. Join us for a discussion on managing your work more efficiently and effectively!

About the speaker

I’m Mark Medalle! I’m a technical writer with a wide range of both work and life experience. As a big believer of lifelong learning and transferable skills, I strive to keep an open mind and open the minds of others as well. When I’m not writing, I enjoy quality time with my wife and two kids and some occasional online gaming.
