Developers and writers have similar jobs, but they tend to use different tools and workflows. Writers who work with developers have an easier time if they learn to fit into the developer culture.
Documentation workflows using text-based authoring and version control systems reduce the “impedance mismatch” between writers and developers. Bug tracking systems and instant messaging tools help writers and developers communicate in a way that feels comfortable to developers. Learning and fitting into the developer culture can help you swim with the current, not against it.

About the speaker:
Richard Mateosian is a technical writer with a long history of working with developers. He currently works at an industrial robotics startup in Emeryville with developers who speak Git and Python (and occasionally mumble C under their breath). He has set up a repository-backed internal website there using a template provided by Tom Johnson of I’d Rather Be Writing fame. He authors mainly in Markdown using a text editor.
Richard is an STC Fellow and a long-time volunteer for the Berkeley STC chapter.
